I don't know how a book can be so polished and so raw at the same time, but Marjorie Wonner has done it. This work is clearly genius and I am awed by the scope of the poems. Capturing family nuances and country life at the same time is difficult, but it is done with aplomb. The poetry in this book is honest, and cuts straight to the heart of the matter in all ways. Provocative and beautiful. I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time.
Mrs. Wonner's book is poignant and honest. Her poems resonate with the sparks of creativity emerging even throughout what seems, on the surface, to be mundane. Her experiences as a country woman who speaks her mind, will leave you feeling like you live across the street, and have known her for years. Her life experiences flow with richness and clarity, accessible to all, regardless of age or lifestyle. A must-read which will remind you of the fact that every person has a story, and memories are always meant to be shared. I finished it in one sitting, and immediately was ready to re-read it, where even deeper nuances were revealed. A rich recollection- I am already excited for her next work!
It would be misleading to say that Marjorie Wonner's debut poetry collection is a pastoral vision about the past. This description suggests that Wonner presents a romantic view of rural life in Pennsylvania. Instead, it would be better to say that Wonner is a master story teller, reviewing her life, the good and the bad, in clear imagery that takes the reader to another place and time. We see descriptions about different kinds of rags used in a farming household, we see stories about abandoned dogs and scared snakes hanging out near back porch steps. We see images of dusty backroads and cucumber gardens. We see poetic narratives about grief, loss, and aging. A wonderful read!
